Mapping Soil Health: First Milestone in GOV4ALL's Altiplano Estepario Campaign
We are thrilled to share a key milestone in the soil sampling campaign we are conducting across the Altiplano Estepario in southern Spain as part of the GOV4ALL EU project.
David López García, our first collaborator in this initiative, has officially completed his campaign in the northwest region of Murcia, covering a vast area and collecting over 250 samples. These samples provide valuable insights into the diverse textures and colours of the region's stony soils.
As an expert in biodiversity management, environmental consulting, and scientific research, David brought his extensive experience in flora monitoring, ecological restoration, and conservation projects to the field. His ability to grasp both the procedural aspects of the sampling protocol and its broader significance has been invaluable.
David's commitment aligns with GOV4ALL's vision of getting accurate soil health data to build long-term sustainable regenerative systems and empower rural communities. Reflecting on his experience, he shared:
"This work has been a physical and structural reconnection with the land I feel I belong to, broadening my perspective."
While David's phase of the campaign concludes, soil sampling continues in the Los Vélez and Guadix regions. Next week, we will extend the campaign to the final three areas: Baza, Huéscar, and Alto Almanzora, completing our coverage of the Altiplano Estepario.
Looking ahead, we are already preparing for our next challenge: soil sampling on Menorca island. Although there are only around 90 sampling points, the process will require covering nearly every square kilometre of the island. This will provide us with a unique opportunity to deeply engage with local farmers and communities, allowing us to explore their landscapes, understand their challenges, and strengthen connections that are essential for fostering sustainable land management.
