In this episode of Rooted to Earth, we talk with Florence Arsonneau, agronomist and Director of FiBL France, who shares her unique insights on guiding a pioneering research institute in the organic agriculture sector. Florence brings both experience and a personal passion for sustainable agriculture, inspired by her love for the Mediterranean diet and a commitment to quality food production.

In discussing FiBL France's role within the FiBL Group, Florence highlights the importance of applied research carried out on real farms:

"Our aim is to conduct applied research through field experiments, working directly on the farms with farmers. This approach means that we don't have experimental sites; instead, we co-create solutions alongside the farmers on their fields."

This hands-on approach not only delivers practical solutions but also deepens the transfer of scientific knowledge to agricultural professionals, which Florence describes as "the DNA of FiBL France."

As the coordinator of the Solvi'Terra Living Lab under the GOV4ALL project, Florence is working to bring soil health to the forefront of regional priorities. She notes that although water scarcity remains a primary concern among local farmers, "soil health is intrinsically linked to resilience, particularly in terms of water management and adapting to climate change." The Solvi'Terra initiative seeks to build awareness of soil's vital role, fostering a long-term commitment to soil health among farmers and other stakeholders.

Reflecting on the challenges of bringing diverse organisations together, Florence sees effective governance as key to success: 

"If we really want to provide good answers to the farmers, we need to dedicate time to know each other and coordinate our expertise."

She envisions the Living Lab as a space where local partners can collaboratively develop strategies that support resilience and sustainability for future generations.
